APRIL 8 – FREUD’S LAST SESSION

Freud’s Last Session is a 2023 drama film. The always excellent Anthony Hopkins plays Sigmund Freud. It is based on the stage play of the same name by Mark St. Germain, which itself is based upon the book The Question of God, by Armand Nicholi. Near the end of his life, Freud was said to have met with “an Oxford don.” C.S. Lewis was a young don at the time, and a popular Christian apologist. The film imagines what would happen if the don was Lewis and Freud and he discussed the question of God.

APRIL 2 – A REAL PAIN
R, 90 min.
A Real Pain (Polish: Prawdziwy ból) is a 2024 buddy road comedy-drama film written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg. An international co-production between Poland and the United States, the film stars Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as mismatched cousins who reunite for a Jewish heritage tour through Poland in honor of their late grandmother, but their old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.

MARCH 25 – SMALL THINS LIKE THESE

Small Things Like These is a 2024 historical drama film, based on the 2021 novel by Claire Keegan. The film stars Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) as a small-town Irish coal merchant. Its plot focuses on the infamous Magdalene Laundries, which operated from the 18th to the late 20th centuries. They were run ostensibly to house “fallen women”, an estimated 30,000 of whom were confined in these institutions in Ireland. Many were abused and died young, often buried in unmarked graves.

What is a Christian to do when fascism is on the rise? See what true-life German theologian, pastor and anti-Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer did during WWII in this week’s film: Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.
Bonhoeffer (released as Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.) is a 2024 historical drama thriller film about the German theologian and anti-Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer, written, produced and directed by Todd Komarnicki (Elf). Set in 1940s Berlin, it dramatizes the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who stood up to the Nazis during the Third Reich as a result of taking his faith seriously, the point of martyrdom.

THE BEAST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER

Although it’s Easter time, this week we’re watching The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Based on the beloved book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a 2024 American Christmas comedy-drama film directed by Dallas Jenkins (creator of “The Chosen”), based on the beloved 1972 novel by Barbara Robinson. Starring Judy Greer, Pete Holmes, Molly Belle Wright, and Lauren Graham, the plot centers around the Herdmans, a group of juvenile delinquent siblings who have unexpectedly found themselves starring in their small town’s Christmas pageant.

MARCH 4 – CONCLAVE

Oscar-nominated film Conclave is this week’s film, a tense political thriller about picking the new pope amidst secrets and lies.
Conclave is a 2024 political thriller film, based on the 2013 novel by Robert Harris. The powerhouse cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. In the film, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence organizes a conclave to elect the next pope and finds himself investigating secrets and scandals about the major candidates.
